Canoe Club White Water Trip

Posted on Friday, September 30th, 2016

Far, far too early one morning last December three quite sleepy Scouts met at the 25th, helped load kayaks onto cars and set off into the pitch darkness.

This was the Canoe Club’s first white water day trip. The Scouts had all passed a PaddleSport Discovery course (equivalent to the 2* award) earlier that year. With the techniques from this course under their belts and bright yellow helmets firmly wedged upon their noggins, we were able to treat them to a slightly more exciting and demanding river than can be experienced at the Wye Valley camps.

Two vehicles travelled 130 miles from Southampton to Exemoor in Devon. Our trip down the river Barle started at the ancient Tarr Steps and finished at the village of Dulverton. We paddled for three to four hours, the water was excellent, there being plenty of it, with continuous grade 2 rapids from start to finish. The Barle provided some great autumnal scenery and we even found a rather excellent spot for a picnic on the banks.

The Scouts all paddled brilliantly. As leaders we could tell they were all nervous at first, but the wobbles soon gave way to big grins as they began to confidently smash through bigger and bigger stoppers and even surf on waves.

DC’s Notes – September 2016

Posted on Sunday, September 11th, 2016

Thelma Young has kindly agreed to be the “Acting DC” for Southampton City Scout District while the search for a new District Commissioner goes on. The DC duties will continue to be shared by the “team DC” so that Thelma is supported by:

  • Ian Budd – Nights Away (NAN forms), adventurous activities, permits, district events, etc.
  • George Longhurst – awards, presentations, etc.
  • Nico Chart – admin, training, media, etc.
  • Graham Meering – Compass, DBS checks, etc.

I am sure you will join us in thanking Colin again for his leadership, dedication and service as our DC for the past five years. Colin is going to become County Network Commissioner as well as being our Campsite Manager looking after our own camp site at Wilverley in the New Forest.

And thank you everyone for your continuing enthusiasm and hard work that it takes to give the young people of Southampton a great time in Scouting. Let’s make it another good year!

Best Regards,
Nico, Graham, George, Ian, Thelma.

S.S. “Shieldhall” – Youth Training Day – Sat 15th Oct 2016

Posted on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

All “signed-up” young participants will also receive a free ticket for the short (3 hour) cruise that “Shieldhall” will be making on the afternoon of Saturday 17th September (15.00 to 18.00 hrs) when we will be sailing from 48 Berth down the length of Southampton Water to the Solent. It is planned that the Southampton Maritime Trust will be onboard outlining details of their Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War Project plus on the way back we should see the departing cruise liners “Brittannia”, “Celebrity Eclipse” and “Emerald Princess”.

The full adult’s ticket price for this sailing is £27.50 but each group will be entitled to two half price tickets for accompanying adults. The full rate is applicable to other adults over and above the two as said. The ticket price for youngsters over and above those attending the Y.T.D. is £10.00 / hd.

We can also advise that we will allow early boarding and the opportunity of visiting all area’s (under supervision) i.e. the bridge, engine room, etc., as we prepare for going to sea.

At this moment in time I can confirm that there are still places available albeit a little limited in number. Early application to our Mr Nigel Philpott, Ticketing Manager, for these remaining places is therefore recommended. To book “on-line” @ www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk or call 0844 357 2329.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard again sometime soon.

Kind regards,

Richard W. Jarvis.
Youth Training Co-ordinator.

Pro-Badge Camps 2016/17

Posted on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

Pro-Badge is an Activity Badge Training Scheme, which uses the resources of the Solent Scout Training Centre at Lyons Copse, to the best advantage of the Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Scout Leaders. The scheme provides training for badges that require predominantly outdoor Scouting activity or natural resources.

You can book your Cubs and Scouts in to weekend camps over the coming months to give them a chance to earn some of the outdoor-based badges.

Leaflets for the forthcoming Pro-Badge season are now available on the ProBadge website, please click here for the Cub Scout leaflet, and here for the Scout version. Please feel free to pass onto other Cubs, Scouts and Leaders.

This year we will also be running a Pioneer course for Explorer Scouts, this will run on our November weekend. Please note that Explorers will have to camp as we do not have indoor accommodation for them.

To book on any courses please contact via the website links or email me direct.

Thank You

“Scissors” (Clive Clark)
Camp Leader
